With ChatGPT’s ability to generate mind maps instantly, it’s easy to see the appeal—what once took hours of thoughtful, meticulous work can now be done in seconds.
However, there’s something crucial being overlooked here: the essence of learning isn’t just about having the final product. It’s about the process of creating it. For students, the true value of a mind map doesn’t lie solely in its ability to summarise or present information neatly. It stems from the cognitive effort involved in making it, synthesising information, drawing connections, and engaging deeply with the material.
When students let AI do the hard thinking for them, they miss out on very processes that make learning meaningful.
Generative Learning: the key to effective studying
A powerful approach to effective education is through Generative Learning, a principle rooted in Cognitive Science. It emphasises the importance of active engagement with material, encouraging students to link new concepts to their existing knowledge. The power of Generative Learning lies in the generation process itself. It’s not about passively consuming information but actively working to make sense of it. This not only deepens students’ understanding of the material but also strengthens their memory and critical thinking.
We’ve explored this concept with students writing their own flashcards, and the same applies with creating mind maps. These processes are so beneficial because they enhance cognitive processing. The act of creating, whether flashcards, mind maps or any study material, engages the brain in ways that passive reviews simply cannot. This phenomenon is known as the Generation Effect: actively constructing information creates stronger memory traces, making recall and application far easier.

The Double-Edged Sword of Generative AI
Generative AI refers to technologies that can produce new content like text and images. It represents a transformative tool in education with immense potential. On one hand, generative AI can potentially be a game-changer. If used correctly, it can help make things more efficient and, in some cases, even more effective.
But it is important to note that it is also a double-edged sword. If we get it wrong, AI could encourage a culture of shortcuts where students prioritise the final product over the process. This would result in them hindering their own long-term learning.
