Recently, the parents of a high school student in Massachusetts filed a lawsuit in federal court, claiming that their son was unfairly penalised for supposedly using artificial intelligence to complete a history project. Using an AI detection tool, the teacher had flagged the work as AI-generated and gave the student a low grade and Saturday detention. This decision has also reportedly jeopardised the student’s college admission prospects.

This case highlights a growing issue in education: the unintended consequences of relying on AI detection tools. A recent study shed light on these problems, revealing that these tools often accuse both students and scholars of using AI when they haven’t. This raises a critical question: are we placing too much trust in these tools and, in doing so, unintentionally harming the very students we aim to support?

Why do we use AI detection tools?

The rise of Artificial Intelligence in education has sparked debates about academic integrity. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT can create essays, reports, and projects in seconds, and it’s no secret that students are using them. This has led to concerns about AI plagiarism, where students submit AI-generated content as their own without acknowledging its use.

For teachers, this is a daunting challenge. We want to ensure that students develop their writing, critical thinking, and research skills. When AI tools are used irresponsibly, they undermine these efforts. In response, AI detection tools like Turnitin and ZeroGPT have become increasingly popular in schools and colleges. These systems analyse patterns in text, like sentence structure and predictability, to distinguish between human and machine writing.

However, whilst they promise to identify AI-generated content, they often fall short in practice. For teachers and students alike, their flaws can cause unnecessary harm.

The unreliability of AI detection tools

One of the most significant issues with AI detection tools is their tendency to produce false positives, which basically means to mistakenly flag original, human-written work as AI-generated. This makes it worth considering some of the harms of AI detection tools:

1. Impact on academic integrity

False positives can severely impact students’ confidence and their sense of accomplishment. Imagine a student proudly submitting an essay they worked hard on, only to be labelled a cheater by an AI detection tool. This unjust accusation can tarnish their academic record and bring feelings of frustration.

For teachers, these tools can unintentionally damage relationships with students. Trust is the foundation of any classroom, and when students believe they are unfairly targeted, it can erode the sense of mutual respect. Instead of fostering an environment of growth and learning, over-reliance on AI detection tools can make classrooms feel punitive and mistrustful.

2. Suppressing linguistic diversity

AI detection tools are currently limited in their ability to appreciate nuance or creativity. They rely on algorithms trained on conventional patterns of language use, making them prone to flagging unconventional ideas or writing styles as AI-generated.

Non-native English speakers face a similar challenge. Many detection tools are trained on datasets that reflect standard English conventions, making them biased against students who use different sentence structures or phrasing. These biases penalise linguistic diversity, treating alternative phrasing or non-standard structures as red flags rather than valid expressions of thought.

AI detection tools are not only biased but also alarmingly easy to manipulate. Simple tricks like paraphrasing or using “humanising” tools to edit AI-generated text can bypass detection entirely. This paradox creates an ironic situation: students who misuse AI intentionally may escape detection, while those who write authentically face unwarranted scrutiny.

For example, is it acceptable for students to use AI for brainstorming or grammar checking? Where should they draw the line? 3. Foster transparency

Transparency is key to fostering trust in the classroom. Teach students how to responsibly incorporate AI into their work while maintaining their originality and voice, making it clear that responsible AI use isn’t about hiding their methods but being honest about them.

Encourage students to disclose when and how they’ve used AI in their work. For example, you might ask them to include a short note explaining whether they used AI for brainstorming, editing, or other tasks. This simple practice not only promotes accountability but also helps students reflect on their choices and better understand their own learning process.

As educators, we must recognise the limitations of these tools and focus on fostering a culture of trust, transparency, and ethical engagement with AI.
