When it comes to studying smarter, not just harder, Dual Coding is an often-overlooked strategy. This approach involves combining text with visuals when learning. Doing this doesn’t just make study materials more interesting – it also helps students understand and remember information more effectively. 

What is Dual Coding?

Dual Coding is the process of using both verbal and visual information to learn and store knowledge. Instead of just reading text or only looking at diagrams, you do both. 

The core idea is rooted in cognitive science, specifically Paivio’s Dual Coding Theory from the 1970s. Paivio proposed that our brains process verbal and non-verbal information through two separate channels. When these channels are activated simultaneously – for instance, when we read the word “car” as well as see an image of a car – our memory of that information becomes stronger. 

The underlying mechanism essentially involves the brain creating two different representations of the same idea, one linguistic and one visual. This helps us encode information more deeply by giving us multiple routes to retrieve it. 

The research on Dual Coding

In one review of multiple studies, researchers looked into how Dual Coding helps students, particularly in science classes. They found that when students were given a mix of text and visuals, their understanding and memory of complex ideas improved noticeably. This was especially true in middle school (11 to 14 years old) settings, where scientific vocabulary and concepts can often feel abstract and hard to grasp.  

In another study involving 204 university students, participants were grouped based on their preferred “learning styles” (like visual or verbal) and then asked to study material presented in either visual or auditory formats. Interestingly, the results revealed that students in the visual condition retained twice as much information as those who received the same content in auditory form – regardless of their supposed learning style preference. This suggests that the power of visuals isn’t just subjective; it has measurable cognitive benefits.

What does this mean for the classroom?

Understanding the theory is one thing; applying it effectively in the classroom is another. Fortunately, Dual Coding is highly adaptable and doesn’t require expensive resources or dramatic shifts in curriculum. Below are three simple yet impactful ways to incorporate Dual Coding into revision and study routines:  

1. Creating flashcards with drawings 

    Flashcards are an effective revision tool when students create them and Dual Coding can enhance their impact. Rather than simply writing a definition on one side and the term on the other, students can pair the text with a drawing. For instance, when revising biology terms, a flashcard for “photosynthesis” might include a labelled diagram of the process along with the key terms and definitions. 

    The act of drawing or selecting the right image makes students think more deeply about the concept. They’re not just passively reviewing but instead are actively connecting the dots. Even stick figures or quick doodles count, because rather than worrying about artistic skill, it’s about helping the brain remember. 

    2. Elaboration and diagrams 

      Elaboration is another cognitive strategy that pairs well with Dual Coding. It involves students explaining concepts in their own words and linking them to prior knowledge or personal experiences. For example, learning about food chains can involve explaining the concept ouloud andnd drawing a simple food web based on animals in your local area.  

      What makes this powerful is its combination with Retrieval Practice. Known as Constructive Retrieval, this blended method goes beyond memorising facts. It helps learners develop a deeper understanding of complex topics and make meaningful connections between concepts. By integrating images and diagrams into elaboration exercises, like concept maps or illustrated explanations, students can build a robust mental model of the topic. 

      3. Successive relearning 

        Successive Relearning is a research-backed technique that blends Retrieval Practice with Spacing – two strategies widely shown to boost long-term memory. The process involves practicing the recall of information until it’s mastered and then revisiting it across several sessions to reinforce retention. 

        Here’s where Dual Coding comes in: when students review material, encourage them to use visuals alongside text, not just reread their notes. These visuals can take many forms – timelines, labelled diagrams, flowcharts, or infographics – and can vary each time they revisit their revision.

        Final thoughts 

        In a world filled with information overload, finding smarter ways to learn is more important than ever. Dual Coding doesn’t promise shortcuts, but it does offer a more efficient and enduring path to mastering complex material by engaging both the verbal and visual systems in our brains.  

        While it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution, it pairs beautifully with other study strategies like Retrieval Practice, Spaced Repetition, and Elaboration. For students, it means more effective and engaging revision, making their learning lifelong.
