As AI becomes more deeply embedded in education, a heated debate is ongoing: is AI helping or harming students? While AI has the potential to be a game-changer for learning, reliance on it could weaken essential skills like students’ creativity.

But what does the research say?

So, what does research reveal about AI’s impact on student creativity? One study examined 225 university students who were assigned a creative writing task. Half used ChatGPT for assistance, while the other half worked without AI.

One of the key findings was that students who used ChatGPT produced more creative outputs compared to those who didn’t. AI-generated suggestions helped students explore unconventional ideas, refine their writing, and experiment with new structures or concepts.

This was particularly beneficial for non-native English speakers, who often struggle with language barriers that hinder their ability to fully express creative ideas. By smoothing out grammar and refining sentence structure, ChatGPT allowed these students to focus more on the content and creativity of their work rather than technical correctness.

Additionally, students who used AI found that it reduced the difficulty and effort required for creative tasks. Having AI assist them made the process smoother and less overwhelming.

However, while AI improved the quality of creative work, it also diminished the value and enjoyment of the creative process itself. Many students reported feeling less engaged or emotionally connected to their work when AI was heavily involved. Students need to understand how AI works, its biases, and its limitations. Schools may want to consider integrating AI literacy into the curriculum, teaching students to critically evaluate AI-generated content and recognise when AI is helpful versus when it undermines learning.

Setting clear guidelines can help students navigate the grey areas of originality and fair use, ensuring they engage with AI in a responsible and meaningful way.
