Technology is now undoubtedly woven into how students communicate, study and learn. Digital devices bring clear benefits for teaching and learning, and they’re here to stay. However, alongside these benefits come challenges.

With the vast majority of students now owning a phone, the potential for distraction has never been greater. In a recent review, researchers examined the causes, consequences and prevention of digital distractions in education.

The authors describe ‘the omnipresence of notifications and the habit of constant connectivity’ as fostering a culture of divided attention. In classrooms, this can mean students’ focus is constantly pulled in multiple directions, often away from the task at hand.

Insights from a systematic review 

In their systematic review of 26 studies, the researchers categorised the causes, consequences and prevention strategies of digital distractions into the ‘TPE framework’, which stands for Technology, Personal and Environment. The framework helps to explain not only where distractions come from but also how they affect students and what can be done to address them

By looking at digital distraction through these three lenses, the review highlights how both technology and human behaviour interact with the learning environment, creating challenges but also pointing toward practical solutions.

Here is what they found:

Causes of digital distractions  

Across the 26 studies, the researchers found that, somewhat predictably, technological causes were the most common. However, personal justifications and factors also played a large role.

Technology 

Just over half of all reported causes of digital distraction were technological. Constant social networking, messaging and the drive to stay connected were the biggest culprits, along with alerts, ringtones, ads and pop-ups. Internet or smartphone addiction was also frequently cited.

For teenagers, part of the drive to stay connected may stem from the fear of missing out (FOMO), the feeling that others are having more fun or are more socially engaged. This can lead to persistent phone checking even during lessons.

Personal 

Personal factors accounted for around 38% of causes. These include students’ own reasons for using technology for non-academic purposes, such as streaming videos, playing online games or online shopping, as well as traits like boredom, low motivation, habitual use or impulsiveness.

Environment 

Environmental factors made up the remaining 10%. These covered aspects of the instructional setting that can trigger distraction, including less engaging teaching, overly challenging course content and poor classroom management.

Understanding why students become distracted is key to addressing the downstream effects on their behaviour and learning. By identifying the root causes, you can tailor strategies to reduce distractions and support student focus. 

Impact of digital distractions on students’ learning 

Now that we’ve looked at the causes of digital distractions, how do these impact students’ wellbeing, academic performance and the classroom environment? The reviewed studies reported a variety of consequences of digital distractions, most prevalently impacting students’ personal performance.

Technology – problematic technology use 

Problematic technology use includes broader issues stemming from the misuse of devices, such as anxiety and general wellbeing concerns. There are safety risks, as unrestricted internet access may expose students to inappropriate content or risky online behaviour. Social media use can also intensify the fear of missing out (FOMO), leaving students more likely to check phones during lessons. You can read advice for students to overcome FOMO in this blog here

Personal – performance issues 

Personal performance refers to how digital distractions affect students’ academic and cognitive functioning. Distractions prevent sustained attention, causing frequent lapses or shifts in focus. Furthermore, multitasking and ineffective reading behaviours reduce comprehension and cognitive processing. Other consequences include lower recall, less accurate note-taking, procrastination, and overall declines in academic performance.

Environment – disrupted classroom interaction 

Classroom disruption captures the impact on the learning environment itself. Students distracted by devices often miss your instructions, not due to teaching quality but because their attention is divided. This leads to reduced participation and lower engagement in class activities and can affect the dynamics of the classroom as a whole. ‘Attention contagion’ is the idea that inattention can spread among students within the same class; therefore, even one student being distracted by their phone may have a knock-on impact for the rest of the classroom.

Understanding these consequences highlights why addressing digital distractions is essential, not only for individual student outcomes but also for the effectiveness of the classroom as a learning space.

Prevention strategies  

The good news is that there are practical steps you can take to reduce digital distractions without losing the benefits of technology. The studies each suggested prevention strategies, with instructional interventions being the most common suggestion, followed by technological ones.

Technology – technological controls 

Tech-based controls tend to focus on directly reducing the potential for distraction from devices. While some schools opt to ban devices during lessons, others take a more balanced approach by limiting their use to specific educational purposes.

A practical middle ground is to minimise interruptions by silencing notifications or encouraging students to use settings such as ‘Do Not Disturb’. Even simple routines, like asking students to switch phones off or keep them out of reach during class, can significantly reduce the pull of non-academic content.

Personal – behavioural interventions 

Personal behavioural interventions focus on supporting students’ self-regulation and accountability. This might involve private conversations with students who struggle most, guiding them toward strategies that improve focus. You can also encourage self-regulated techniques, such as using self-control apps, setting personal accountability goals, or practising intentional breaks from devices.

You can reinforce positive behaviours with regular check-ins, structured activities that boost focus, and consistent expectations for engagement.

Environment – classroom regulations 

Classroom environment regulations involve setting clear expectations for how technology should be used. Rules work best when they are specific and consistently enforced, leaving little room for ambiguity about what is acceptable.

By combining clear rules with support for personal responsibility, you can reduce distractions while maintaining the benefits of technology in learning.

Quick tips for teachers 

  • Set clear boundaries: agree classroom rules for device use and revisit them regularly.
  • Reduce alerts: ask students to silence notifications or use ‘Do Not Disturb’ during lessons.
  • Design engaging tasks: keep activities active and interactive to limit the temptation of distraction. 
  • Model healthy use: show students how you manage your own devices to stay focused. 
  • Encourage self-regulation: teach students strategies like time-management apps or setting personal focus goals. 
  • Check in regularly: use quick reflections or conversations to help students notice when and why they get distracted. 

Final thoughts 

Banning devices altogether is just one option, but it isn’t the only way to address digital distractions. A range of strategies can be used, from clear classroom rules and technology controls to supporting students’ self-regulation. Just as importantly, helping students understand the causes and consequences of distraction equips them to take more ownership of their focus.  

As technology continues to evolve, especially with the rise of AI, new forms of distraction are likely to appear, from off-task dialogue to over-reliance on automated answers. By learning how to manage devices effectively, and by guiding students to do the same, we can create classrooms where technology enhances teaching and learning, while minimising the risks of digital distractions.
