How does attention develop as students grow?

Attention is vital for student success. Without it, they can struggle to absorb, comprehend and retain class material.

However, is their ability to maintain attention static, or does it develop over time? And if it does change, would this impact how they learn?

How is attention limited?

Attention is a finite resource. Individuals cannot focus on everything at once – working memory capacity is limited to holding roughly 7 things in their working memory at any one time. Nor can they remain focused indefinitely – for many years, psychologists claimed that a student’s attention span ranged between 10 and 20 minutes, whilst more recent research shows that lapses in attention occur even more frequently. 

Trying to exceed this attention capacity can lead to an overload, which can then slow down and hinder the learning process.

But is everyone’s ability to maintain focused the same? Is it a fixed trait, or can it develop over time?

What does the latest research say?

A recent study looked at how age affects students’ ability to focus and maintain attention. To do this, researchers looked at the reaction time of a variety of students, starting from those in early adolescence to young adults.

They asked students to complete a visual task on a computer. The participants were presented with a circle of 6 letters and had to identify whether the circle contained the letter ‘X’ or ‘N’, quickly pressing different keys to indicate what they saw. The researchers manipulated the difficulty of the task throughout the experiment by getting the students to complete two conditions:

  1. Difficult visual information condition: The five other letters were a variety of capital letters
  2. Simple visual information condition: The five other letters were 5 lowercase ‘o’s

Additionally, a face popped up next to the letters on 10% of trials to distract participants. To overcome this, the students needed to be able to filter out the irrelevant information – the face – and focus on identifying the correct letter.

Researchers found that the ability to maintain attention does continue to develop throughout adolescence; younger students seemed to lose focus at certain points, whereas older students were able to display a relatively consistent reaction time.

Distracting faces didn’t seem to have much effect in the simple visual information condition (the easy task). However, when they tried the more difficult visual information task, some students struggled; older students still seemed to find it quite easy to ignore the distracting faces in the hard condition, but this was not the case for younger students. The difficult visual information, combined with the distracting faces, seemed to overwhelm them, leading to a longer reaction time. The researchers suggested this was because younger students have a lower attention capacity.

We’ve seen that attention can develop with age, but how can we help students without waiting for them to simply grow up?

1. Manage the classroom environment

Younger students tend to have a lower processing capacity, making them more vulnerable to environmental distractions. A busy classroom can overload their working memory before learning even begins.

It then follows that minimising distractions in the classroom should help free up some space, allowing them to remain focused on the task at hand. You can start small; try implementing some simple changes, like carefully considering seating plans and reducing classroom decorations.

2. Chunk information

Large amounts of academic material can be overwhelming for students, making it more difficult to focus and retain information. Breaking down content into smaller chunks can help students to process difficult subject matter more effectively. Try introducing one concept at a time, using step-by-step instructions and incorporating breaks for reflection after each section.

3. Minimise digital distractions

Mobile phones are one of the most persistent attention drains in modern classrooms. Research has shown that simply having a phone visible, even when it’s not being used, can reduce students’ concentration by up to 20%.

To support focus, especially in younger students with lower attention capacity, consider implementing clear tech-use guidelines in the classroom. By removing the constant lure of digital devices, you create a learning environment that better supports sustained attention and academic engagement.

Attention isn’t a fixed trait. It develops throughout adolescence, changing how students take in material and participate in lessons. Understanding these developmental patterns and the effectiveness of small classroom changes can be key to designing effective learning strategies and helping your students to stay focused on the task at hand.
