Cognitive Science has had a growing influence in education over the last decade. Teachers, schools, colleges and governments all over the world are using insights into how memory, attention and learning work and how to teach more effectively as a result. But despite the strong evidence base, some arguments continue to be made against its use in education. And frankly, some of them don’t hold up well at all.
Most weak arguments start from a hint of truth. But over time, as ideas get repeated and rephrased, they get exaggerated, misunderstood and distorted. This “Chinese whispers” effect can make bad arguments sound convincing. Here are five of the worst arguments against Cognitive Science in education, along with where they come from and why they don’t stand up to scrutiny.

1. “It’s just about teaching to the test.”
Where the myth comes from: Many studies in Cognitive Science use test performance as a measure of learning. That makes sense; it’s a simple, objective way to assess whether something has been remembered.
Why it’s a weak argument: If Cognitive Science were just about boosting test scores, it would favour short-term cramming. But in fact, it strongly advocates the opposite: strategies like Spacing and Retrieval Practice help students remember content over time, not just in the moment. The goal isn’t to pass a test – it’s to build lasting understanding. That’s not “teaching to the test.” It’s teaching for learning.
2. “It only works for subjects like Maths and Science.”
Where the myth comes from: Many Cognitive Science studies focus on Maths and Science, partly because it’s easier to measure right and wrong answers in those subjects before and after an intervention.
Why it’s a weak argument: Whilst Cognitive Science Maths and Science are well-researched, the underlying principles – reducing cognitive overload, encouraging deliberate thinking and structuring content effectively – are universal. In fact, techniques like Interleaving and Retrieval Practice have shown benefits across a wide range of subjects, including English, art, foreign languages and PE. Cognitive Science is not subject-specific. It’s brain-specific.
3. “It only applies to certain age groups.”
Where the myth comes from: A lot of early psychological research used university students as participants. That’s because researchers often study the people closest to them, and for many psychology departments that means undergrads.
Why it’s a weak argument: There’s now a growing body of evidence showing Cognitive Science strategies work with younger students too. For example, Retrieval Practice has been shown to benefit pupils in primary schools, not just older students. Age and stage of students matter in terms of the application, but the core principles of how memory works are consistent across the lifespan.
4. “Every child is different, so Cognitive Science doesn’t apply.”
Where the myth comes from: This idea often stems from a well-intentioned belief in personalisation. Teachers are encouraged to tailor their lessons to meet individual needs – and rightly so.
Why it’s a weak argument: Cognitive Science doesn’t ignore individual differences. Instead, it explains the shared processes of learning and memory that apply to all students. It gives teachers a framework to work from; one that they can adapt based on the learners in front of them. If anything, it is a core component of Cognitive Load Theory. Saying “every child is different” shouldn’t be a reason to reject evidence. It should be a reason to apply it thoughtfully.
5. “Teachers already know this stuff instinctively.”
Where the myth comes from: Some of the strategies linked to Cognitive Science – like reviewing material or modelling a worked example – will feel familiar to experienced teachers. That can lead to the impression that Cognitive Science simply confirms what we’ve always done.
Why it’s a weak argument: There’s a big difference between doing something and knowing why it works. Understanding the principles behind these strategies helps teachers apply them more precisely, adapt them more effectively and avoid common misconceptions. Another reason why this is a weak argument: just because some colleagues have known this for a long time/discovered it along the way, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make it as clear and explicit to as many new staff as possible.
Final thoughts
Cognitive Science isn’t a silver bullet. But it’s not a passing fad either. It’s a growing, evidence-based field that can help teachers make more informed decisions about how to support learning. These five arguments may sound convincing on the surface – but when you look more closely, they don’t stand up. And when learning matters as much as it does, we can’t afford to ignore what the science says.
